What is Wool Felting? New designs added to Beginner Wool Felting Kits.

Our beloved heart style wool felting kits have been so popular that we have added two more designs.  Now you can make hearts, leaves, and flowers. Making wool felt is a slow, tactile practice that allows you to take a break. It's beginner friendly and for all ages.  Every design is beautiful and you can be as creative as you like.  You don't even have to follow the pattern!

What is Wool Felting?

The process of joining wool fibers together to make a sturdy fabric is felting. Have you even accidentally had a wool sweater or blanket go into the washer and/or dryer?  It shockingly shrinks down to child size, and you can't get it back.  This is felting.  Easy, right?  There are several ways to make felt.

Wet Felting

Our beginner friendly wet felting kits are the easiest way to make fabric.  All that is needed is wool, warm water, hand soap, and lots of friction. Your hands can do all of the work in about a 1/2 hour.  Lay out pieces of clean wool (on bubble wrap or a bamboo mat, for texture), sprinkle with water, add soap and spend some time rubbing the wool. Once you have a stable fabric, rinse, roll in a towel, and you can use it to cut out shapes. More details are found in our kits.

Needle Felting

This technique doesn't use any water at all, just sharp, barbed, felting needles.  These are tiny needles with different gauge sizes and sometimes shapes.  You lay out the wool, or bunch it up to make a 3D shape, and stab it with the needle.  This provides the agitation needed to make the wool fibers grab onto each other.  You've probably seen those cute little creatures made from wool using needle felting.  This technique allows you to make super fine details and I often will do some needle felting on top of my wet felted pieces.

Knit/crochet/weave and then wash

Have you ever seen felted slippers, or a "boiled wool" jacket?  This is where someone knits, crochets, or weaves a very large piece and then washes it to cause it to felt.  Just like the accidental washing machine experience, the hot water, soap, and agitation cause the fabric to shrink down.  The wool fibers adhere together and form a thick fabric.
